MULTIMEDIA Concepts, Technical Challenges, and Implementation Manu Malek SEMINAR DESCRIPTION AND OBJECTIVE: Multimedia refers to the ability to integrate voice, graphics, text and video seamlessly. It is a multibillion dollars/year business, and is growing rapidly. The objective of this seminar is to 1. provide an understanding of the current and emerging multimedia technologies, 2. describe the technical issues and current solutions, 3. review the strategies and industry trends to implement it, and 4. identify the standards and state-of-the-art capabilities and product offerings. PREREQUISITE: Basic knowledge of data communication. PRESENTER: Manu Malek is a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories, and an Adjunct Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Stevens Institute of Technology. He has over 15 years of experience in teaching, practicing, and research in telecommunication networks modeling, optimization, operations, and management. He is a pioneer in developing the discipline, concept, and methodologies of providing telecommunications services to customers, and an authority in national and international standards for network transport, internetworking, network management, and systems integration. Dr. Malek holds a Ph.D. degree in EE/CS from UC Berkeley. He has held various academic positions in the US and overseas. He has also held technical management positions including Manager of the Special Services Standard Designs Engineering District at Bellcore, and Supervisor of Special Studies at AT&T Bell Laboratories. Dr. Malek is the author, coauthor, or editor of six books, and the author or co-author of over fifty published technical papers and numerous internal technical reports in the areas of communication networks, network operations and management, computer communications, and optimization. He is a fellow of the IEEE, was the Network Management editor for the IEEE Transactions on Communications during 1988-91, and is Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Network and Systems Management.
